Cutting and Pasting a Column Selection Changes Save As Format

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

After you cut and paste a column selection in a text file, the file format will change from Text Only to Word Document.

CAUSE

When you cut and paste a column selection in Word, before the column selection is inserted into the document, Word will remove, or attempt to remove, any information that may be related to tables. Because this is a Word document format, Word will assume that you now want to save the file as a document and not as a text-only file.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Open README.DOC.
  2. Press F12 to check that Format is set to Text Only.
  3. Press SHIFT+CTRL+F8 (Column Select) and select some text.
  4. From the Edit menu, choose Cut.
  5. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.

Notice when you choose Save As from the File menu, the file is now in Word format. This does not happen when you make a regular selection and then cut and paste. This also does not happen in Word 5.5.
