SYMPTOMS

Calling the QueryDosDevice() API with an incorrect device name causes a STOP message to appear. An unhandled kernel exception error is generated in NTOSKRNL.EXE.

CAUSE

If you use "C:\" instead of "C:" for the device name, the object manager module of Windows NT incorrectly releases memory holding references to the present drive. After several calls to QueryDosDevice(), the STOP message appears.

RESOLUTION

Use the correct device name ("C:").

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem was corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1.
