The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Works for Windows, version 3.0

SYMPTOMS

When you start Works for Windows, you may receive the following error message:

Works requires SHARE.EXE in order to run

CAUSE

Either Share (SHARE.EXE) or the virtual device driver VSHARE.386 must be installed in order to run Works for Windows, version 3.0.

RESOLUTION

To solve this problem, upgrade to Works version 3.0b, which installs and uses VSHARE.386.

WORKAROUNDS

If you are unable to upgrade to Works version 3.0b, use the following workarounds.

Method 1: If you just finished installing Works 3.0, you may need to restart Windows.

Method 2: If the error message still occurs after you restart Windows, do the following to add SHARE.EXE to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (for versions of MS-DOS 5.0 or later) and ensure that SHARE is loaded before you start Windows:

      a. Open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in a text editor, such as Notepad.

      b. Add the line:

            C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100

NOTE: Share must be positioned in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
somewhere after any instance of SMARTDRV.EXE and before any
         commands to start Windows.

      c. After you make the modification, save the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

      d. Exit Windows, and then restart your computer.

If the SHARE.EXE line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file is being loaded
high, there may not be enough memory to load the file. Remove
the Loadhigh parameter from the Share line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT
      file and try again.

This problem also occurs when the path statement in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file to load SHARE.EXE is pointing to a SHARE.EXE
file that is incompatible with your version of MS-DOS. Confirm
that the path is loading the correct version of SHARE.EXE. The
file date of SHARE.EXE and the file date of COMMAND.COM should
      match.

MS-DOS 4.01 will automatically load SHARE.EXE before the
AUTOEXEC.BAT if your hard disk drive has partitions larger
than 32 megabytes (MB). In this case, you must add the
following SHARE.EXE line to the CONFIG.SYS file for the
      parameter to take effect:

         INSTALL=<path to share>\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100

STATUS

This problem does not occur in Microsoft Works version 3.0a or 3.0b for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

If you are using Windows for Workgroups in enhanced mode or Works 3.0a or 3.0b for Windows, SHARE.EXE is not required. It is emulated by the VSHARE.386 device (in the [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI).
