Last reviewed: July 30, 1997
Article ID: Q106649
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0, 6.0a
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0
SYMPTOMS
If you use a locked master document as the data source for a mail merge, Word may sort the data source, even though it is a locked document. When this happens, the following error messages may occur:
Record (number) contained too few field delimiters(number). Record (number) contained too few data fields.
CAUSE
Word sorts a mail merge data source, even if it is a locked master document, if you set sorting criteria under the Sort Records tab in the Query Options dialog box. (To open the Query Options dialog box, choose the Mail Merge button on the Mail Merge toolbar or choose the Merge button in the Mail Merge Helper dialog box and then choose the Query Options button.)
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
