You can quickly customize a menu or assign a keystroke to a command by using shortcut keys.

Menu Example

To add a menu option for a particular file to the bottom of the File menu, do the following:

1. Press CTRL+ALT+EQUAL SIGN. The insertion point will change from an I-beam to a plus symbol.
2. From the File menu, choose Open.
3. Select a file.
4. Choose Cancel.

The name of the file will now be listed on the bottom of the File menu below Exit.

Note: Not all commands can be added to menus with this shortcut.

To remove the filename from the File menu, do the following:

1. Press CTRL+ALT+HYPHEN. The insertion point will change from an I-beam to a minus symbol.
2. From the File menu, choose the filename that you want to remove from the bottom of the File menu.

The filename is no longer listed on the File menu.

Keyboard Example

To create command key assignments quickly, do the following:

1. Press CTRL+ALT+PLUS SIGN on the numeric keypad. The insertion point will change from an I-beam to a command symbol.
2. Choose a command from any menu. Word displays the Customize dialog box, showing only the command you selected.
3. In the Press New Shortcut Key box, press the shortcut key or keys you want to assign to the command or other item.
4. Choose the Assign button.
5. Choose the Close button.
