Insufficient Memory Error Message When Temp Directory Is Full

Q106448

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

Word may generate an error message that there is insufficient memory or that it won't be able to undo if the temporary directory is full.

MORE INFORMATION

Depending on the operation, Word's temporary files can get as large as 16 megabytes (MB). For example, repeatedly moving and resizing an OLE embedded graphic object can create very large temporary files.

To check if the temporary directory is full, do the following:

  1. From the Help menu, choose About Microsoft Word.
  2. Choose the System Info button.
  3. From the "Choose a Category" list box, select System.

The temporary directory is listed at the bottom of the list. Check the "Space available on Drive" line to determine the amount of free space.

For example, if the temporary directory is C:\TEMP, check the "Space available on Drive C:" line.

This number is the free kilobytes, so "1500 KB" is 1.5 MB free.
