PRA: Control with Expression Shows up Blank in Form View

Article ID: Q106296
Creation Date: 04-NOV-1993
Revision Date: 19-SEP-1996 The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Access versions 1.0, 1.1, 2.0

SYMPTOMS

Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability skills.

A control that contains an expression appears blank in Form view. However, if the control receives focus, the proper value appears. You can press TAB to move to the control or click it with the mouse; once the pointer is in the control, the correctly calculated value appears.

All bound controls on the form display their correct values at all times.

CAUSE

This problem is often caused by an outdated or incompatible Windows video driver.

RESOLUTION

Change the video driver to a standard driver included with Windows, such as the 640 x 480 VGA driver.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Access versions 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Access for Windows 95 version 7.0.

MORE INFORMATION

Certain video driver incompatibilities can cause calculated controls on a form to appear blank until the control receives focus. For example, a text box with the following ControlSource appears empty in Form view until you click the control with your mouse. Then the correct value is displayed.

   ControlSource:=Date()

To test for video driver incompatibility, change the video driver that Windows is currently using. For best results, change the video driver to the standard 640 x 480 VGA driver included with Windows. If the problem does not occur using the VGA driver, contact the video card manufacturer and/or computer manufacturer for an updated video driver.

For instructions about changing the video driver, refer to your Microsoft Windows "Users Guide."
