SYMPTOMS
When you use the Windows NT Backup program to back up LAN Manager 2.x Services for Macintosh files, restored folders may not have their proper names restored. If the folder has a long filename, the restored folder name may be truncated to an 8.3-character filename. However, files will be restored with their proper names.
CAUSE
LAN Manager 2.x Services for Macintosh uses Extended Attributes (EAs) on both FAT and HPFS to store Macintosh information, including the LONGNAME. The Windows NT Backup program is not recognizing Extended Attributes on directories, but is recognizing them on long filenames, because they are restored.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1 and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
