SUMMARY

If you are using a third-party shell program (such as HP NewWave, PC Tools Desktop for Windows, or Norton Desktop for Windows) instead of Microsoft Windows Program Manager, in order to create a network-launchable icon for Microsoft Project, you may need to follow a setup procedure other than simply running the Setup program that comes with Microsoft Project.

To install Microsoft Project when you are using a shell program other than Program Manager, follow the appropriate procedure below.

NOTE: Make sure that you have already correctly installed the third-party shell on your computer and that Microsoft Project is properly installed on a shareable network drive.

HP NewWave

1. From the Settings menu in NewWave, choose Install Application.
2. Select the WINPROJ.EXE file on the network drive. To change drives, type the new drive letter and a colon in the File Name field and press RETURN.
3. Choose OK.

A dialog box will appear telling you that NewWave is installing Microsoft Project as a new object type.

4. Double-click the Create a New Object icon in NewWave.

5. Select the Microsoft Project icon and choose Create.

A Microsoft Project dialog box will appear.

6. Type “Microsoft Project” (without the quotation marks), for the title and choose OK.

7. Choose Done.

8. Select the newly created Microsoft Project icon and from the Settings menu, choose Application Attributes.

9. Set the Startup Directory to the working directory or to a directory where the you have write access and choose OK.

NOTE: Because NewWave has an object-oriented approach, this setup will not be identical to a setup under Program Manager. Under this NewWave setup, double-clicking the icon will launch an empty file called MICROSOF.MPP. If you are using NewWave, you might want to create a NewWave folder specifically for Microsoft Project files so that and each *.MPP file would reside in the folder as a separate object. The setup described above, however, will globally set the startup or working directory for all Microsoft Project objects or files.

PC Tools Desktop for Windows

1. From the File menu in PC Tools for Windows, choose New.
2. In the title field, type “Microsoft Project” without the quotation marks.
3. Set the Command Line to the drive letter, complete path, and filename to WINPROJ.EXE on the network drive.
4. Set the working directory to your working directory or another directory where you have write privileges.
5. Choose OK.

Norton Desktop for Windows

1. From the File menu, choose New.
2. Select a group destination for the new program icon.
3. Choose OK.
4. Set Type to Item.
5. Type “Microsoft Project” (without the quotation marks)for the title.
6. Under Program/Document/Script, type the drive letter, path, and filename to the network-executable version of the WINPROJ.EXE file. (You may want to use the Browse button to do this.)
7. Choose the Options button.
8. Enter the working or user directory under the Startup Directory setting.
9. Choose the OK button twice.
