To do this, click Options on the Tools menu (in Word 98 Macintosh Edition, click Preferences on the Tools menu), click the View tab, and click to select (turn on) or clear (turn off) the Field Codes check box. To quickly toggle field codes display, press ALT+F9 (OPTION+F9 on the Macintosh). MORE INFORMATION To add field codes to the View menu, use the appropriate method for your version of Word. Word 97 On the Tools menu, click Customize and then click the Commands tab. In the Categories list, select All Commands. In the Commands list, select ViewFieldCodes. Click and hold the mouse button and drag ViewFieldCodes to the View menu. The View menu will drop down. Position the mouse pointer at the location you want the View Field Codes command and then release the mouse button. In the Customize dialog box, click Close. To save the change, hold down SHIFT and click Save All on the File menu. Word 6.x, 7.x On the Tools menu, click Customize. Click the Menu tab. In the Categories box, select All Commands. In the Commands box, select ViewFieldCodes. In the Change What Menu box, select &View. Click Add. Click Close. To save the change, hold down SHIFT and click Save All on the File menu. NOTE: When you add the ViewFieldCodes button to a toolbar and field codes are toggled on or off with the keyboard (ALT+F9), the button does not show the new state of the field codes until the user moves the insertion point or clicks the mouse.
