GP Fault Saving to Word for Windows 2.0 File Format

Q105886

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

If you save a Word for Windows document in the Word for Windows 2.0 file format, a general protection (GP) fault error may occur in WINWORD.EXE.

CAUSE

This happens if your document contains an endnote, footnote, or annotation within any of the following document elements:

  • Table of contents
  • Table of figures
  • EMBED or LINK field

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word for Windows version 6.0. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0.

WORKAROUNDS

  • Move the endnote, footnote, or annotation out of the table of contents, table of figures, or the EMBED or LINK field.
  • Instead of saving the file in Word for Windows 2.0 format, save it in Rich Text Format (RTF).
