SYMPTOMS
If you save a Word for Windows document in the Word for Windows 2.0 file format, a general protection (GP) fault error may occur in WINWORD.EXE.
CAUSE
This happens if your document contains an endnote, footnote, or annotation within any of the following document elements:
- Table of contents
- Table of figures
- EMBED or LINK field
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word for Windows version 6.0. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0.
WORKAROUNDS
- Move the endnote, footnote, or annotation out of the table of contents, table of figures, or the EMBED or LINK field.
- Instead of saving the file in Word for Windows 2.0 format, save it in Rich Text Format (RTF).
