Windows Resources Lost After Exiting Word for Windows

Q105826

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

SYMPTOMS

When you exit Word for Windows, you may have fewer Windows resources available than before you started Word. (To see the percentage of available Windows resources, switch to Windows Program Manager and choose the About Program Manager command from the Help menu.)

After you lose sufficient resources, memory errors may occur in Word or other Windows-based applications. Some applications, including Word, may not even start.

CAUSE

Windows loses available resources after you do the following several times:

  1. Start Word.
  2. Maximize the current document.
  3. Close the document.
  4. Exit Word.

Note: The resource loss occurs sooner if you maximize the Word window as well as the document window.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in versions 1.x and 2.x of Word for Windows. This problem was corrected in version 6.0 of Word for Windows.

WORKAROUND

Once you have lost Windows resources, you must exit and restart Windows to restore the resources.

To avoid losing resources, make sure there is at least one document window open when you exit Word.
