In Word, the Line Number character style formatting changes with the Normal style font definition, even though the style is based on the Default Paragraph Font.

The Line Number character style behaves differently than other character styles that are based on the Default Paragraph Font, such as Annotation Reference and Footnote Reference.
This behavior is by design. Changing line numbers to reflect individual paragraph fonts would produce unprofessional documents. Line numbers need to be consistent throughout a document, without reflecting font changes in the text.

The Default Paragraph Font character style is defined as the font of the underlying paragraph style and is the underlying style for such character styles in Word 6.0 as Annotation Reference, Footnote Reference, and Line Number. In general, the Default Paragraph Font feature allows character styles to take on the font formatting of the paragraph they are in.

The Line Number character style is based on Default Paragraph Font. However, line number formatting actually changes based on the format of the Normal style font formatting.
