Q105698

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0

SUMMARY

This article lists some keyboard shortcuts to assist you in drawing various shapes in the drawing layer in Word.

MORE INFORMATION

  • To temporarily override the Snap To Grid feature in Word for Windows, hold down the ALT key as you draw. If Snap To Grid is not on, holding down the ALT key activates it. Use the COMMAND key in Word for the Macintosh.
  • To return an imported graphic to its original size after cropping or scaling in Word for Windows, hold down the CTRL key and double-click the graphic. Use the COMMAND key in Word for the Macintosh and double- click the graphic.
  • To keep drawing objects without having to re-click the button each time, double-click the tool. Click the button again (or select a menu item, and so on) to return to an I-beam. This applies to the Line, Rectangle, Ellipse, Arc, Freeform, Textbox, and Callout tools.
  • To create an object centered at a specific point in Word for Windows, select the Rectangle, Ellipse, or Arc tool and then hold down CTRL as you drag out an object. Using CTRL+SHIFT creates a perfect square or circle from a specific point. In Word for the Macintosh hold down COMMAND+CONTROL while dragging the object.
  • Hold down the SHIFT key as you drag a line. This aids in drawing horizontal, vertical, or 45-degree lines.
  • To constrain an object (rectangle to a square, arc to a circular arc, and ellipse to a circle), hold down the SHIFT key when dragging.
