SUMMARY

This article describes how to use Microsoft Access version 1.1 to convert databases between version 1.0 and 1.1 formats, and how to create new databases in either version 1.0 or 1.1 formats.

Database versions are not listed when you choose Open Database or Repair Database from the File menu. If you try to open a version 1.1 database in Microsoft Access version 1.0, you will receive the error message:

Database is corrupted or is not an Access Database

If you try to repair a version 1.1 database in Microsoft Access version 1.0, you will receive the error message:

Out-of-date database format

In Microsoft Access version 1.1, existing databases can be converted between version 1.0 and 1.1 formats. You can use either the Compact or Encrypt command to perform the conversion. New databases can be created in either format.

How to Convert Between Version 1.0 and 1.1 Formats Using Compact Database

1. Start Microsoft Access version 1.1. Do not open a database.
2. From the File menu, choose Compact Database.
3. In the Compact From dialog box, select the database you want to convert.
4. In the List Files Of Type box, select the format to which you want to convert the database.

How to Convert Between Version 1.0 and 1.1 Formats Using Encrypt

1. Start Microsoft Access version 1.1. Do not open a database.
2. From the File menu, choose Encrypt/Decrypt.
3. In the Encrypt/Decrypt dialog box, select the database you want to convert.
4. In the Encrypt box, select the format to which you want to convert the database.

How to Create a Database in Version 1.0 or 1.1 Format

1. Start Microsoft Access version 1.1.
2. From the File menu, choose New Database.
3. In the List Files Of Type box, select the format in which you want to create the new database.
