SUMMARY

In Word, different multilevel numbering schemes can be used in one document. To restart the numbering from a certain number, there must be an unnumbered paragraph before the group of paragraphs you want to renumber. To have two groups of paragraphs with different numbering formats, a section break must be inserted between the two groups. To choose a numbering scheme select the Format menu, choose Bullets and Numbering and select the Numbered tab.

MORE INFORMATION

If a series of paragraphs are formatted with multilevel numbering, each paragraph will be numbered sequentially. There is no way to restart the numbering without inserting an unnumbered paragraph between the two groups of paragraphs that you want numbered separately. For example:

  1. 1. Para1
Para2 (this line is not numbered)
       1. Para3

       1. Para1
       2. Para2
       3. Para3

Note: The paragraph mark used to separate the groups of paragraphs can be formatted as hidden (Format Font) so that it will not create a blank line. The paragraph mark used to separate the groups of paragraphs cannont be formatted as a bulleted paragraph, or renumbering will include the paragraph.

To use different numbering formats in the same document, insert a section break between the two groups of numbered paragraphs:

  1. From the Insert menu, choose Break.
  2. Select Continuous to start a different numbering format on the same page as the previous format. (Or, to start a different numbering format on a new page, select Next Page.)

Changing the format of the multilevel numbering will change the format for the entire section.

As with all section-level formatting, deleting the section break will cause the previous section to take on the formatting of the following section.
