MORE INFORMATION

When you connect from a Windows NT 3.1 computer to a LAN Manager or LM/X 1.x server, you may be prompted for a password.

Some down-level servers may be incapable of handling encrypted passwords. Due to security considerations, Windows NT 3.1 computers will not send an unencrypted password to the network unless the user types it in. During session establishment, a protocol level is negotiated. If the server being connected to indicates that it cannot handle encrypted passwords, the the Windows NT computer will prompt the user as follows:

The password is invalid for \\servername\sharename.

Type the password for \\servername\sharename:

If the correct user password is typed in at this point, the connection will complete successfully.
