The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0

SUMMARY

The PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys may behave differently in Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0 than they do in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel. The differences in behavior are only apparent if you are near the top (usually, rows 1-40) or the bottom (usually, rows 16340-16384) of your worksheet.

When you use these keys in other locations, they function the same as in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel.

Steps to Reproduce Situation

To see the difference in the way the PAGE UP key behaves, do either of the following:

  1. On a new worksheet, select cell A10. Cell A1 should be visible on the screen.
  2. Press the PAGE UP key.

In Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0, the computer will beep and cell A10 will remain selected. In earlier versions of Microsoft Excel, cell A1 will be selected.

-or-

  1. Select cell A10 and scroll the worksheet so that cell A10 is in the upper-left cell of the screen.
  2. Press the PAGE UP key.

In Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0, the worksheet will scroll so that cell A1 is visible, but cell A10 will remain selected. In earlier versions of Microsoft Excel, the worksheet will scroll up AND cell A1 will be selected.

To see the difference in the way the PAGE DOWN key behaves, do either of the following:

  1. In a new worksheet, select cell A16380. Cell A16384 should be visible on the screen.
  2. Press the PAGE DOWN key.

In Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0, the computer will beep and cell A16380 will remain selected. In earlier versions of Microsoft Excel, cell A16384 will be selected.

-or-

  1. Select cell A16380 and scroll the worksheet vertically so that cell A16380 is in the lower-left cell (no part of cell A16381 should be visible).
  2. Press the PAGE DOWN key.

In Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0, cell A16384 will be selected. In earlier versions of Microsoft Excel, the worksheet will scroll down so that cell A16384 is visible but cell A16380 will remain selected.
