SUMMARY

This article contains questions and answers about unexpected quitting and system errors.

MORE INFORMATION

   1. Q. I'm receiving the error message "The application 'Word
<version>' has unexpectedly quit." What should I do?

      A. This error message indicates that the system or application has
         encountered a problem.

One of the following four methods may help you resolve the
         problem:

NOTE: If you are running with System 6, use methods 1, 3, or
         4. If you are running with System 7 or later, use methods 2,
         3, or 4.

         Method 1

NOTE: Use this method with System 6 only.

If you don't have a system startup disk available, use the
following four steps. (If you do have a system startup disk
         available, use Method 3.)

          1. Create a new folder on the hard disk and name it EXTRAS.

          2. Move any nonstandard INITs (startup documents) or cdevs
(Control Panel documents) out of your System Folder and
place them in the folder called EXTRAS.

          3. Restart your computer.

          4. Restart Word.

         Method 2

NOTE: Use this method with System 7 only.

Restart your computer while holding down the SHIFT key. Release
the SHIFT key after you see the "Welcome to Macintosh.
         Extensions off." message.

         Method 3

Restart your computer using a system startup disk.

         Method 4

If you still receive the "The application 'Word <version>' has
unexpectedly quit" error message in Word after restarting your
computer using one of the above methods, remove the Word
Settings file from the System Folder. Use the following steps
to remove the Word Settings file:

          1. Quit Word.

          2. Move the Word Settings file from the System Folder to the
             desktop.

          3. Restart Word.

If the "...unexpectedly quit" error message persists after you
use the above methods, call Microsoft Technical Support and speak
to a Word for the Macintosh support engineer.
