Excel: Errors Updating Objects Pasted with Paste Picture Link

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q105157

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use Paste Picture Link in a worksheet containing an existing chart object linked to the same sheet, Microsoft Excel may change the picture link reference after you save and reopen the worksheet.

WORKAROUND

To work around this situation, do not paste the chart until all picture objects have been pasted onto the sheet. Pasting the chart last keeps the linked references from changing.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create 2 new sheets: Sheet1 and Sheet2.
  2. In Sheet1, enter the following data:

          A1: a B1: 1
          A2: b B2: 2
          A3: c B3: 3

  3. Select A1:B3 and create press F11 to create a chart.
  4. Copy the chart and paste it into Sheet2.
  5. Switch to Sheet1 and copy A1:B3.
  6. Activate Sheet2 and use Paste Picture Link (press SHIFT and choose the Edit menu) to paste into Sheet1.
  7. Save, close, and then reopen both files.
  8. The linked reference to picture 1 will now reference SHEET1.XLS!B1:B3 instead of SHEET1.XLS!A1:B3.
