Applying Formatting to Page Numbers in Word

This article contains the two methods available to change the font format of page numbers.

The first method involves creating the page numbers by using a running head and the Page item from the glossary. Do the following for the running head and glossary method:
- At the top of the document, type the word “page”. Press the F3 key. Page will now appear as “(page)”.
- With the highlight anywhere in the line containing the word “page,” make the line a running head with the Format Running Head command. In Word Version 5.50, use the Format Header/Footer command.
- Select the line and apply font format with the Format Character command. This also applies to Word Version 5.50.
The second method involves creating the page numbers with the Format Division Page-Numbers command and using a style-sheet entry to apply the format. Do the following for the style-sheet method:
For Word Versions 3.x, 4.x, and 5.00:
- In the Gallery menu, create a character style using the Page Number variant with the Insert command.
- Highlight this style and select the font format with the Format Character command.
- Make sure the style sheet is attached to the document.
- In the Edit menu, turn on the page numbers with the Format Division Page-Numbers command. The font format will be applied to the page numbers.
For Word Version 5.50:
- In the Format Define Styles menu, create a character style using the Page Number variant with the Insert New Style menu option.
- Highlight this style and select the desired font within the Font field of the Format Character menu option.
- Make sure the style sheet is attached to the document.
- In the Format Section menu, select the Page Numbers command, and select either From Top: or From Bottom: to activate the page numbers. The font format will be applied to the page numbers.
