Excel Err Msg: "Too Many External References," with Windows NT

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1

When you attempt to add more than 255 sheets or charts to a Microsoft Excel workbook, you may receive the following error message:

   Too many external references

Microsoft Excel workbooks are limited to no more than 255 sheets or charts per workbook. DDEML function DdeCreateStringHandle() internally calls GlobalAddAtom() to add a string to the atom table. This global atom table is a piece of GlobalAlloc() memory limited to 64K, where each atom string is limited to 255 characters.
