WIN.INI [Embedding] Section Not Updated in Workstation Upgrade

Last reviewed: July 30, 1997
Article ID: Q104881

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-cd, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Windows version 3.0 and 3.1

SYMPTOMS

Setup does not update the [Embedding] section of the Windows WIN.INI file at the workstation if you:

  1. Run a Server Installation to setup an upgrade of Word for Windows (for example, from Word version 2.0a to 2.0c) on a different directory of the server.
  2. Then run a Workstation Installation to set up Word on a different directory of the workstation.

The [Embedding] section of WIN.INI continues to list the previous location of the OLE server applications (Microsoft WordArt, Microsoft Draw, Microsoft Equation Editor, Microsoft Graph). For example, if your first installation of Word is on the WINWORD1 directory of the server and on the USER1 directory on the workstation and the second installation of Word is on the WINWORD2 directory of the server and on the USER2 directory on the workstation, Setup does not update the [Embedding] section of the workstation WIN.INI.

The only setting that Setup updates in the [Embedding] section of WIN.INI is the Word Document setting:

   Word document=Word, Document,Word Document,<path to new directory>

WORKAROUND

To update the [Embedding] section of WIN.INI:

  • Run a Custom Setup at the workstation and reinstall the OLE server applications. -or-
  • Manually update the [Embedding] section of the workstation WIN.INI to reflect the new location of the OLE server applications on the server.
