SYMPTOMS
========
When installing Publisher, you may receive the following error message
after all the files have been copied to your hard drive:
Setup could not be completed.
This problem may occur because one of the following conditions exists:
- The file CTL3D.DLL is in your Windows directory, and is locked or
read-only.
-or-
- There is more than one copy and/or more than one version of
CTL3D.DLL on your computer.
Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information
here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
RESOLUTION
==========
You are most likely to have more than one copy and/or version of
CTL3D.DLL on your system if you have previously installed one of the
following:
- Microsoft Access for Windows
- Microsoft SoundBits for Windows
- Microsoft FORTRAN, 32-bit version
- Microsoft Mouse, version 9.0
To search for duplicates of CTL3D.DLL, follow these steps:
1. Open File Manager.
2. From the File menu, choose Search.
3. In the Search For field, type the following:
CTL3D.DLL
4. In the Start From field, type the following:
C:\
5. Make sure the Search All Subdirectories check box is selected, and
choose OK.
There should be only one copy of CTL3D.DLL, and it should be in your
Windows SYSTEM subdirectory. If other copies of this file exist,
delete them, then restart Windows and try installing Publisher again.
MORE INFORMATION
================
Having duplicate (or read-only) CTL3D.DLL files on your system may
also cause problems with WordArt. If you use the Stretch or Add New
Symbol options, WordArt may stop responding (hang), forcing you to
restart your computer.
