SYMPTOMS

If a field is formatted with default text in a Works 3.0 database, and then all the records from the database are removed, the default text will no longer appear.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create a database. Format one or more fields with any default text. Type information into the records, and confirm that the default text appears properly.

  2. From the File menu, choose Save As and name the database.

  3. From the Form menu, choose List View.

  4. Delete all entries from the database using one of these two selection methods:

    1. Use the mouse to drag over and select all of the data.

    2. Press SHIFT while clicking each field name with your mouse to select all of the data.

  5. From the Edit menu, choose Cut.

  6. Enter new data in the records.

  7. The default text will not appear in those fields formatted with default text, even if you reformat the field with the default text.

RESOLUTION

Delete all entries from the database using one of these two selection methods:

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Select All to select all of the data, then press Clear.

    -or-

  2. Using the mouse, drag over the record selector boxes to select all of the data, then press Clear.

If one of these methods is used, the default text will appear when typing new information into the records.

MORE INFORMATION

This is important if you are creating multiple databases with the same field names and you want to format fields with default text. An example of default text would be “WA” in a “State” field.
