PowerPoint for Windows Files Won’t Open from CD-ROM Drives PSS ID Number: Q104427 Article last modified on 09-15-1994 PSS database name: POWERPT

3.00 3.00a 3.00b MACINTOSH

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 3.0a, and 3.0b

SYMPTOMS

A PowerPoint for Windows file cannot be read off of a CD-ROM drive connected to a Macintosh. Trying to access a Windows PowerPoint file from the CD-ROM drive will result in a message stating that the “File is locked and cannot be read.” This is because the Macintosh computer requires a resource fork to open the file, and you cannot write to most CD-ROM drives.

WORKAROUND

To open the file from the CD-ROM, copy the file to your hard drive, and then open it from PowerPoint. This PowerPoint for Windows file will read without any problem.
