Windows NT Does Not Provide Floppy Drive Security by Default

Q104193

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server, version 3.1

SUMMARY

Windows NT currently does not provide security for floppy disk drives. Because the NTFS file system is too large for floppy disks, they can only use the FAT file system, which is not able to support the security features of Windows NT.

You can prevent the transfer of critical data from an NTFS partition of your hard disk drive to a floppy disk by denying users access to the directory that contains that information.
