"Print to File" Option Prints to Printer Under Windows NT

Last reviewed: July 30, 1997
Article ID: Q104080

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

If you are running Windows NT and you print from Word for Windows with the Print To File option selected, the print job is directed to the printer instead.

CAUSE

Windows NT ignores the Print To File option in Word for Windows and prints to the output device designated in Windows NT Print Manager instead.

WORKAROUND

To redirect a Word for Windows print job to an output file, you must reconfigure your printer so its output is "FILE:" instead of a printer port or network printer.

To change the printer output destination in Windows NT, do the following:

  1. Open Windows NT Print Manager.
  2. Select the printer window so it is the active window. (It should appear on top of all other printer windows).
  3. From the Printer menu, choose Properties.
  4. From the Print To list, select FILE:
  5. Choose OK.

Until you change this setting, everything you print to this printer is redirected to an output file instead of a printer port or network printer. Note: When you print to a file with Windows NT, you will not be prompted for the filename of the output file until the application finishes printing.
