SYMPTOMS

When you are using the Telnet services under the Terminal application in Windows NT, if you type any arbitrary sequence of white characters and then press ENTER, you may receive the following error message:

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

LMSRVCS.EXE

Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x766026ee

Note: The address may be different, but the Access violation code should be the same

This message stops the Telnet service. If you attempt to restart the service from the Control Panel Services application, your machine may hang. The results of attempting to restart the Telnet service are random. To successfully restart the Telnet service, shut down and restart Windows NT.

CAUSE

The Telnet service was not parsing input characters properly.
