“Fatal Error” Message or Screen Corruption in Grammatik 5.0

PSS ID Number: Q103866 Article last modified on 11-03-1994

====================================================================== 6.00 MS-DOS kbother

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

Error messages or screen corruption may occur in Grammatik version 5.0, which is supplied with Word for MS-DOS, if you open the Get Preferences File dialog box, cancel it, open the Create Custom Style dialog box, and then press the DOWN ARROW or ESC key.

No errors occur if you open the Create Custom Style dialog box directly, without first opening and canceling the Get Preferences File dialog box.

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

If the above errors or screen corruption occur, exit and restart Grammatik. When you reopen the Create Custom style dialog box, the Custom Writing Style names display correctly and no errors occur.

Avoid opening and then canceling the Get Preferences File dialog box prior to opening the Create Custom Style dialog box.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Start Grammatik by typing “GMK” (without the quotation marks) at the MS-DOS command prompt.

    -or-

Switch to Grammatik by pressing ALT+G in Word.

  2. From the File menu, choose Get Preferences File.

  3. Press F3 to select the Show All Files option.

  4. Press ESC to cancel the Get Preferences File dialog box.

  5. From the Preferences menu, choose Writing Style.

  6. Press the F2 key to select the Create Custom Style option.

Result: If you have not previously defined a custom writing style, only an asterisk (*) displays in the Custom Writing Style list. Grammatik should display the following three custom style names:

[Custom 1] [Custom 2] [Custom 3]

If you press the DOWN ARROW key, binary code (“garbage” or “machine language”) appears on the screen. If you press ESC, the following error message occurs:

FATAL ERROR: Preferences file created by incorrect version of grammar checker. Restore preferences file from distribution disks. Press <Esc> to continue:

If you previously defined a custom writing style, the following error message occurs, followed by the “FATAL ERROR” message:

Unable to save new custom style. Your disk may be write-protected. Press <Esc> to continue:

MORE INFORMATION

Grammatik stores custom writing styles in a preferences file (.PRF).
