CUPKEYBD.DRV Causes GP Fault in MS Publisher 2.0

CUPKEYBD.DRV Causes GP Fault in MS Publisher 2.0

Q103799

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Publisher versions 2.0, 2.0a
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When starting Publisher, you may get the following error:

   MSPUB caused a General Protection Violation in
   module CUPKEYBD.DRV @ ####:####

CAUSE
=====

This problem may be due to an incompatibility between Publisher 2.0 and the
CUPKEYBD.DRV keyboard driver from Norton-Lambert's Close Up.

NOTE: Unconfirmed reports indicate that versions 5.0 and later of CloseUp
do not cause this problem because the later versions use "non-invasive"
methods of installing. In other words, the program uses its own .INI files
instead of modifying settings in the existing Windows .INI files.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

Method 1: Replace the CUPKEYBD.DRV Driver
-----------------------------------------

Remove the CUPKEYBD.DRV from the KEYBOARD.DRV= line of the SYSTEM.INI
file, and replace it with the Windows keyboard driver, KEYBOARD.DRV.
The edit line in the boot section of the SYSTEM.INI should then read
as follows:

   keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv

Method 2: Disable the Line
--------------------------

Disable the line by placing a single semicolon (;) at the beginning of
the line

   keyboard.drv=c:\windows\cupkeybd.drv

and then add a line below it such as the following:

   keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv
