Network-Dependent Services Are Not Removed by Control Panel

Q103741

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server, version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

After removing a service like TCP/IP using the Network portion of Control Panel, when you restart your system, you get several error messages logged in the event log.

CAUSE

The Network portion of Control Panel does not remove dependent services when you remove a particular service. Because these services cannot find the service they depend on, they generate error messages.

RESOLUTION

Remove all dependent services. If you are not sure which ones are dependent, note the ones that generate error messages or fail to start.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
