WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c - Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

You copied a selection from a Word for Windows document to the Windows Clipboard and then exited Word, but you cannot link or embed the selection in the client application.

CAUSE

Word must be running if you want to link or embed a Word selection using the Clipboard.

When you exit Word, Word removes the three OLE server formats (Native, ObjectLink, and OwnerLink) from the Clipboard. The only formats that remain are the standard formats (such as RTF, text, picture, and bitmap), and these formats do not support OLE.

WORKAROUND

After you copy a selection to the Clipboard, leave Word running while you link or embed the selection in the client application.
