Excel: NPV() Function Only Counts Arguments That Are Numbers

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q103634

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS/2, version 3.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 4.0

Page 292 of the "Function Reference," version 4.0, contains the following information about the NPV() function:

Arguments that are numbers, empty cells, logical values, or text
representations of numbers are counted; arguments that are error
values or text that cannot be translated into numbers are ignored.

This information is incorrect. Only arguments that are numbers are counted. Empty cells, logical values, text representations of numbers, error values, and text that cannot be translated into numbers are ignored.

This same documentation error occurs on page 162 of the "Function Reference," version 3.0.
