SUMMARY
If you enter a negative value in the 1st Page Number box in the Page Setup & Margins dialog box, computers with math coprocessors (386/387 and 486DX computers) will truncate the entry and set the page number back to 1.
WORKAROUND
To work around this situation, split the document into two parts and print the first part (page -1) with a negative page number and then print the remainder of the document with a page number 0 beginning on page 2 of the entire document.
This workaround uses the following steps:
- Highlight the first page of text.
- From the Edit menu, choose Cut.
- From the File menu, choose Create New File.
- Select Word Processor in the Create New File dialog box.
- In the new Word Processor, choose Paste from the Edit menu.
- From the Edit menu, choose Headers & Footers and type -&p where you want the page number to print and choose OK.
- Print the new document.
- From the Window menu, choose the original document to switch to it.
- From the File menu, choose Page Setup & Margins and type 0 in the 1st Page Number box.
- From the Edit menu, choose Headers & Footers and type &p where you want the page number to print and choose OK.
- Print the original document.
NOTE: You can have additional negative page numbers using the above steps for each page and inserting a different value in the 1st Page Number box.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works for Windows versions 2.0 and 2.0a. This problem was corrected in Works for Windows version 3.0
