Excel: GET.DOCUMENT(36) Returns Blank

Last reviewed: June 30, 1997
Article ID: Q103510

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, and 4.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 3.0 and 4.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS2, version 3.0

SUMMARY

Page 197 of the "Function Reference," version 4.0, and page 109 of the "Function Reference," version 3.0, state that the GET.DOCUMENT(36) macro function returns the name of the user with current write privileges to the document. This information is only partially correct. This function works correctly only when you use it with a document that is saved with write privileges and is opened by a single user in a single instance of Microsoft Excel.

MORE INFORMATION

The GET.DOCUMENT(36) function will correctly return the name of the user with write privileges to the document if the following conditions are met:

  • The document is saved with a write-reserved password.
  • The macro command is executed while the document is opened by a single user.

The GET.DOCUMENT(36) will return a blank in the following cases:

  • The document is not saved with a write-reserved password.
  • The document is opened by multiple users (if, for example, it is being used in a network environment).
  • The document is open by a single user in multiple instances of Microsoft Excel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel version 5.0.
