If you use a NET VIEW command at a Windows NT command prompt on a network with both Windows NT and Windows for Workgroups servers, the following error message may appear:

There are no entries in the list.
== CAUSE ==

This error occurs when a Windows for Workgroups version 3.1 system is a backup master browser in the workgroup and the Guest account has been disabled on the Windows NT master browser machine for the workgroup. If the primary master browser of a workgroup is busy, the backup master browser is used to report the list of servers.

This error occurs because there is no centralized account database in a workgroup to validate the Windows for Workgroups backup master browser when it tries to connect to the master browser to obtain the list of servers. The Windows for Workgroups backup master browser has to use the local accounts database on the Windows NT master browser for authentication before it can obtain the list of servers.

If the Guest account is disabled on the master browser, a Windows for Workgroups 3.1 machine may be unable to connect and retrieve the list of servers.

Windows NT backup master browsers do not send account information when obtaining the list of servers and are not authenticated.
