SUMMARY
This is the fifth of five articles on the User Preferences entries; for the other entries, see "User Preferences Entries, Part 1," "User Preferences Entries, Part 2," "User Preferences Entries, Part 3," and "User Preferences Entries, Part 4".
REGISTRY ENTRIES FOR USER PREFERENCES
The information presented here is primarily for troubleshooting, showing the default entry values and explaining the meaning of important entries. There are no hidden values that you can set for user preferences. All of these values can be set using the icons in Control Panel or the tools in the Administrative Tools group, or other programs provided with Windows NT.
All Registry paths shown here are for HKEY_CURRENT_USER, to show how you can view entries for the currently logged on user. However, most of these entries also appear in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT, where changing entries will change values for the default user profile.
WINDOWS ENTRIES FOR USERS
This section describes values for personal preferences for items that were formerly stored in WIN.INI for versions of Windows for MS-DOS.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows device REG_SZ output-device-name, device-driver, port-connection -------------------------------------------------------------------- Default: printerName,winspool,LPT1: Defines the default printer. An explicit port and driver must be assigned to the device. The device-driver is the filename (without the extension) of the device driver file. To change this entry, use Print Manager. Documents REG_SZ extensions ------------------------------- Default: (empty) Defines files to be considered "documents" by Windows NT. Use this entry to define only document file extensions not listed in the Extensions subkey, because those extensions are automatically considered documents. The extensions listed in this entry are not associated with any application. Separate the filename extensions with a space, and do not include the preceding periods. DosPrint REG_SZ Boolean --------------------------- Default: No Specifies whether to use MS-DOS interrupts when printing. When this entry is Yes, MS-DOS interrupts are used; if the value is No, printing output is sent directly to the port that the printer is assigned to. The default is No. To change this entry, clear Print Direct To Ports option in the Printer Details dialog box in Print Manager. fPrintFileLine REG_SZ Boolean --------------------------------- Default: False fPrintVerbose REG_SZ Boolean -------------------------------- Default: False fPromptOnError REG_SZ Boolean --------------------------------- Default: True fPromptOnVerbose REG_SZ Boolean ----------------------------------- Default: False fPromptOnWarning REG_SZ Boolean ----------------------------------- Default: False load REG_SZ filename(s) --------------------------- Default: (empty) Specifies the applications to be run as icons when Windows NT is started. This entry is a list of application filenames, or documents associated with an application, with each filename separated by a space. Make sure to specify the path if the file is not located in the SystemRoot directory. To change this entry, add the application to the Startup group in Program Manager, and then check Minimize On Use in the Properties dialog box. NetMessage REG_SZ Boolean ----------------------------- Default: no Specifies whether to display a warning message if the system is configured to run a network and the network is not running or the wrong network is running. All Windows network-related options are disabled if the network is disabled or incorrect. Setting this value to 0 turns off the warning message. The default is 1. NullPort REG_SZ string -------------------------- Default: None Specifies the name used for a null port. This name appears in the Printers Connect dialog box in Print Manager when a device is installed (that is, the device driver is present) but is not connected to any port. Programs REG_SZ extensions ------------------------------ Default: com exe bat pif cmd Defines which files Windows NT regards as applications. Separate the filename extensions with a space and do not include the preceding periods. run REG_SZ filename(s) -------------------------- Default: (none) Tells Windows NT to run the specified applications when Windows NT is started. The value is a list of application filenames or documents associated with applications, with each filename separated by a space. Make sure you specify the complete path if the file is not in the SystemRoot directory. To change this entry, add the application to the Startup group in Program Manager.

Default: H_WindowPosition=[213,160,213,160,0] M_WindowPosition=[212,4,425,476,0] This key includes settings that specify the size and placement of the Windows Help window and dialog boxes, as well as the color of text that, when chosen, displays a macro, pop-up window, or new panel. Entries are found under the following Registry path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Help The Windows Help key can include the following entries: M_WindowPosition REG_SZ number, number, number, number, number H_WindowPosition REG_SZ number, number, number, number, number These entries define the default size and position of the main Help window and the History dialog box. The first and second number values define the x and y coordinates of the upper-left corner for the default position of the main Help window and the dialog boxes. The third and fourth number values define the default width and height (in pixels) of the Help window and the History dialog box. The fifth number specifies whether the main Help window is maximized, where 1 is maximized, and 0 is the default height and width of the window. Changing this value has no effect on the size of a dialog box, because it cannot be maximized. To change this entry, move or size the main Help window or the History dialog box. Maximized REG_SZ ------------------ Default: 0 Xl REG_SZ ----------- Default: 166 Xr REG_SZ ----------- Default: 474 Yd REG_SZ ----------- Default: 444 Yu REG_SZ ----------- Default: 120
