Excel: Send Mail Command Does Not Appear on File Menu

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, the Send Mail command will not be displayed on the File menu if the [Mail] section of the WIN.INI file is missing. In order for the Send Mail command to be displayed in Microsoft Excel, the WIN.INI file must contain the following lines:

   [Mail]
   MAPI=1

MORE INFORMATION

The Send Mail command can be used to send mail and attach documents from Microsoft Excel to Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI) compliant mail programs. At startup, Microsoft Excel checks the WIN.INI file for the existence of the above entry. The Send Mail command works correctly only if the above entry is entered in your WIN.INI file and only if your mail program is MAPI-compliant (regardless of the presence or absence of the WIN.INI file entry mentioned above).

The MAPI=1 line in the WIN.INI file is used to inform other mail-enabled applications that the Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI) is present on this workstation. This entry is generally written to the WIN.INI file by the MAPI-complaint mail program. An entry of 1 identifies that the MAPI functions are present on this workstation, while an entry of 0 is used to inform other applications that the MAPI support functions are not present.
