Excel: Type_num Required with DOCUMENTS()

SUMMARY

On pages 118 and 460 of the "Function Reference," version 4.0, the type_num arguments in the DOCUMENTS() and WINDOWS() functions are not bold, indicating that the argument is not required.

This information is incorrect: when you use the match_text argument, type_num is a required argument for both the DOCUMENTS() and WINDOWS() functions if wildcards are present in the match_text argument.

MORE INFORMATION

If the type_num argument is not present when you use wildcard characters in the match_text argument, the DOCUMENTS() and WINDOWS() functions will return an #N/A error value.

Examples:

   =DOCUMENTS(,"aa.*")
   =DOCUMENTS(,"*.*")
   =WINDOWS(,"aa.*")
   =WINDOWS(,"*.*")

If the type_num argument is not present when you are using a valid document name with the DOCUMENTS() function, the formula will return an #N/A error value.

Example:

    =DOCUMENTS(,"Sheet1.xls")
