Excel: Incorrect Reference in Goal Seek Dialog Box

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q102863

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Goal Seek command (located on the Formula menu) in Microsoft Excel, the Goal Seek Status dialog box may refer to an incorrect cell when referring to the cell that contains the formula for which you want to find a specific solution.

CAUSE

To determine the reference to the cell that contains the formula for which you want to set to a specific value, the Goal Seek command refers to the cell that was active before you chose Goal Seek from the Formula menu. However, the active cell may not contain the formula for which you are goal seeking.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in a later version of Microsoft Excel.
