Excel: Center Across Selection Results in Missing Borders

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q102861

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

Centering a text string across a cell range that contains left or right border formats may cause those borders to disappear.

When a cell containing a vertical cell border is included within a selection of cells, and that selection is formatted with the Center Across Selection alignment option, the vertical border may disappear.

CAUSE

This situation occurs when text is entered into any cell to the left of the bordered cell within the selection, and when the cell directly to the right of the bordered cell is empty.

STATUS

This is by design.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this behavior of missing border formats, select the cell to the right of the bordered cell, and reset the alignment for that cell to General.
