The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Works for the Macintosh, version 3.0

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Works custom dictionary disappears when Microsoft Excel 4.0 is installed on a Macintosh already running Works. This behavior occurs because Works and Excel place their custom dictionaries in the same location:

System Folder:Extensions:Microsoft:Spelling

This is only a problem if the Works custom dictionary’s creation date is earlier than April 28, 1992. Dictionaries with later creation dates do not exhibit this problem.

WORKAROUND

  1. Before installing Excel, move the Works custom dictionary file out of the Spelling folder.
  2. Install Excel.
  3. Return the Works custom dictionary to the Spelling folder after the installation of Excel is complete.
