SYMPTOMS
The Microsoft Works custom dictionary disappears when Microsoft Excel 4.0 is installed on a Macintosh already running Works. This behavior occurs because Works and Excel place their custom dictionaries in the same location:
System Folder:Extensions:Microsoft:Spelling
This is only a problem if the Works custom dictionary’s creation date is earlier than April 28, 1992. Dictionaries with later creation dates do not exhibit this problem.
WORKAROUND
- Before installing Excel, move the Works custom dictionary file out of the Spelling folder.
- Install Excel.
- Return the Works custom dictionary to the Spelling folder after the installation of Excel is complete.
