SUMMARY

The specified maximum length of device names in the MODEM.INF and PAD.INF files is 32. However, if any device name is equal to 32 characters in length, you will receive an error message saying that an incorrect device is attached to the communications port. To avoid this problem, it is necessary to modify the MODEM.INF or PAD.INF file, truncating the device name.

NOTE: Make sure you maintain the device name's uniqueness when truncating it. Also, do not include square brackets ([]) when counting the size of device names.

Known Long Device Names in MODEM.INF

In the MODEM.INF file, there are two device names that require truncation: DP Defender 1000D w/ Hayes Ultra (32 characters) and Practical Peripherals 2400 Pocket (more than 32 characters).
