256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SUMMARY

IconVerticalSpacing specifies the number of pixels that appear vertically between icons. Windows NT determines the default based on the icon title font and the display you are using. Windows NT versions 3.5 and 3.51 does not include a graphical user interface to change IconVerticalSpacing. You must use the Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE) to modify the default value.

Windows NT version 4.0 does include a graphical user interface to change this setting.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows NT versions 3.5 and 3.51

To add this new value to the Registry Editor:

  1. Start Regedt32.exe and locate the following Registry subkey and then click it:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

  2. From the Edit menu, choose Add Value. Type IconVerticalSpacing in the Value Name field. Select REG_SZ for the Data Type and choose OK. Enter the number of pixels desired in the String field and choose OK. For Windows NT 4.0, this parameter already exists therefore you may simply enter the value desired.
  3. Quit the Registry Editor.
  4. Log off from Windows NT, then log on again.

Windows NT version 4.0 and Windows 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon and click the Appearance tab.
  3. Click Icon Spacing (Vertical) in the Item drop-down list.
  4. Edit the value in the Size option to change the setting.
  5. Click Apply to make the changes take effect.

NOTE: You may need to experiment with the pixels value to achieve the desired display.
