Excel: WinFax 3.0 Loads Excel Default Worksheet at Startup Last reviewed: September 12, 1996 Article ID: Q102337

The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0 and 4.0a SYMPTOMS If you are using WinFax 3.0 with Microsoft Excel for Windows, one of the default worksheets will be displayed when you start Microsoft Excel. CAUSE The manual for WinFax suggests that you copy one of two macro files to the XLSTART directory, WINFAX1.XLM or WINFAX2.XLM. If you copy either WINFAX1.XLM or WINFAX2.XLM to the XLSTART directory, Microsoft Excel may not be able to load without a default worksheet opening and your Display Options may default to the R1C1 reference style (even if you have a template that specifies the A1 style). This situation occurs because WINFAX1 and WINFAX2.XLM contain an auto-open macro that, by default, displays a new worksheet. WORKAROUND To correct the problem, you can edit the auto-open macro as follows: In Microsoft Excel, if a worksheet is open, choose Unhide from the Window menu. If no worksheets are open, choose Unhide from the File menu. Select WINFAX1.XLM or WINFAX2.XLM and choose OK. In either of the files noted in step 2, under HIDE_MACRO_SHEET, remove the =NEW(1) line. From the Window menu, choose Hide and exit Microsoft Excel. When you are prompted to save the changes to the file, choose Yes. If you remove WINFAX*.XLM from the XLSTART directory, you will not experience the problems noted above.
