This article applies to LAN Manager--the NT implementation differs.
When tuning your network to improve server communications over slow links, you may have to adjust the SESSTIMEOUT parameter as well as T1 and DLCRETRIES.
Frame acknowledgment timeout T1 (in the PROTOCOL.INI NetBEUI section) governs how long NetBEUI waits for a frame acknowledgment before it takes evasive action. You may get good results on slow links by increasing T1.
DLCRETRIES (in the PROTOCOL.INI NetBEUI section) governs how many times NetBEUI tries to re-establish normal communications with the remote station after the initial T1 expiration. You may need to increase DLCRETRIES on slow links to accommodate link traffic fluctuations.
Also for a slow link, you may want to increase SESSTIMEOUT (in the LANMAN.INI Workstation section) which governs how long the redirector waits for:
- acknowledgment that a request server message block (SMB) message was received by the server's NetBEUI (NCB.STO)
- a response SMB message from the server
