SYMPTOMS

A 16-bit Windows-based application running under Windows NT stops responding (hangs) when you attempt to print.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you change your printer output properties while the 16-bit Windows-based application is running.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, close the 16-bit Windows-based application that you are trying to print from before you change your output properties.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Run Print Manager.
  2. From the Printer menu, choose Properties.
  3. Choose Details.
  4. Clear Print Direct To Ports.
  5. Run a 16-bit Windows-based application such as Word for Windows.
  6. From the File menu, Choose Printer Setup and select the Printer you just configured with Print Manager.
  7. From the Print Manager Printer menu, choose Properties.
  8. Choose Details.
  9. Select Print Direct To Ports.
  10. From the 16-bit Windows-based application (should still be running), choose Print from the File menu. The application hangs.
