The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c - Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0 and 3.1

In Word for Windows, if you open and then apply formatting to a Text Only file, you cannot save the file again in Text Only file format with the same filename. This feature is by design in all versions of Word through 2.0c.

After you apply formatting to a file that you opened in Text Only format, you must give the file a different filename if you want to save it again in Text Only file format.

This feature is under review and will be considered for inclusion in a future release.
